The world’s first completely biodegradable shoe is a major step towards tackling plastic pollution. Scientists at UC San Diego led by Professors Robert Pomeroy, Stephen Mayfield, and Michael Burkart, are using their innovative technology to create plastics derived from algae, and hope to apply their product to many other sectors. On this episode of ‘WorldAbout’, Grace chats with Biochemistry Professor Robert Pomeroy about the game-changing material that can be composted over time, instead of ending up in landfill or oceans. He explains the process of how the team developed the idea, as well as future plans to incorporate the material into other areas including furniture, clothing and building materials.
